The Procedure
You will get a chance to discuss your goals and concerns with Dr. Marin during an initial consultation. This will also allow him to determine the ideal injection sites on your face, as well as whether you have sufficient fat cells to perform a fat transfer.
Before the surgery itself, Dr. Marin will use a surgical pen to mark tiny entry sites on your face and fat donor areas. A Scripps Memorial Board Certified anesthesiologist would provide either local or general anesthesia, depending on your comfort.
Fat will be harvested from the donor areas with a liposuction cannula. This fat will be separated into its various components using a centrifuge, and only pure fat and stem cells will be placed into syringes and used for fat injection. Dr. Marin will then use these fat injections to add volume to your face and alleviate wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging.
Facial fat grafting procedures take 1 – 2 hours to complete.

There is no significant downtime associated with most facial fat grafting procedures, but if a large amount of fat was removed, you might need to recover for 1 – 2 weeks. You may apply topical arnica or bromelain to the areas on the face to minimize bruising and swelling during this time.
Dr. Marin will also recommend compression garments that you must wear on the donor sites for up to 2 weeks. No significant scars should form after recovery.
Your New Look After the Surgery
The results of fat grafting manifest immediately after surgery, but your body will absorb some of the injected fat. After 6 – 8 weeks, your results can be considered final, with the fat grafts augmenting your face’s natural contours and youthfulness. Also, the added volume helps remove any signs of aging such as wrinkles, crow’s feet, or fine lines. The injected fat that remains should last for many years to come, and any volume loss can be restored with another session of fat grafting.
